INNOVATIVE TEACHERS’ HUNT (Maths & Science) & KHELO MATHS (A Unique Math Fair)

 

In the week when most Gujarat Board schools were reopening for the second term, St Kabir School Baroda was abuzz with preparations for the Annual Innovative Science & Maths Teachers Hunt + Khelo Math. Organised by city based Discovery Science Groups (who have carried their work to Bharuch, Vadodara, Panchmahals, Kutch and Dahod) and hosted by St Kabir School Baroda, the event lasted for 4 days from 7th November till 10th November.

 

The Innovative Science and Maths Teachers Hunt held on 7th November – was an opportunity to empower teachers and celebrate teachers’ innovations. With over 50 innovative ideas to select from the esteemed judges Dr Madhuben Shah (ex-Reader of MSU-Physics Dept. and ex teacher of Nobel Laureate Dr Venkatraman), Dr Sridhar S.(paediatrician and resource person for world children’s health), Dr D C Vakaskar (Dept of Applied Maths – MSU and consultant to industries) and Mr Arun Muzumdar (Environment scientist and President of Marathi Vigyan Parishad), had a very hard time selecting the best from the best!

 

The competition was open to all schools in Gujarat and focused on low-cost experiments with locally available material (within Rs 200/-) in science and maths for classroom teaching (Stds 5,6,7-GSEB/NCERT based), which throws light on a scientific concept / principle and produces the ‘Aha’ moment. The winners of this competition were :
MATHS – 1st prize (Rs 1000/-) Ms Maya Bhatt (Vidya Vihar School), 2nd prize (Rs 750/-) Mr Thakorbhai Tandel D K Tata High School Navsari, 3rd prize (Rs 500/-) Ms Asha Menon & Vinaya Kamath (St Kabir School, Vadodara).

SCIENCE - 1st prize (Rs 1000/-) Mr Dharmendra Patel & Vrajesh Parmar (N Education – Petlad), 2nd prize (Rs 750/-) Ms Maya Bhatt(Vidya Vihar School), 3rd prize (Rs 500/-) Ms Bhagvatiben Patel & Premilaben Patel (Sardar Rana Prathmikshala, Sevashram).

 

On the 8th, 9th & 10th the St Kabir playground was covered with innovative, fun and creative ways of learning maths- titled KHELO MATH!. Inaugurated by ex-Vice Chancellor Dr Anil Kane, the interactive exhibition had a skit, displays and films by the Indian Air Force (represented by Sqn Ldr Priti Upadhyay), talks by eminent people including Dr. Taraben Mehta, Dr Srinivasan, models by the Discovery Science Group and in-house models made by St Kabir students, a personal collection of 4000 calendars belonging to Mr Muzumdar, a potters wheel for children to try their hand at pottery, fact sheets on currency and number systems, board and floor games, and much more. The exhibition was open between 8am to 3pm for private schools on the 9th and corporation schools on the 10th, and saw over 1000 viewers per day.

 

With this event, the second term has started off with a bang and is now open to many more exciting events across schools as the winter months approach us.
